ITINERARY
The trip is broken down into a shake out run on the first day, following arrival in Ortisei and then a 4 day running tour taking in the best of the Dolomites with one night in a mountain refuge before returning back to Ortisei.
We will meet in Bolzano in the early afternoon before taking private group taxis to Orisei. Once checked in at the hotel we will head out for dinner.
Day 1: Ortisei shake out run (19km +900m / -1300m)
This will be a day to shake out the legs on stunning trails above Orisei. We will take the funicular up the mountainside before taking a great trail up to the summit. From here we will get views over the area we will be running on the tour. A lovely broad ridge run leads to Brogles pass and then we descend on a lovely flowy trail through open pine forest to Furnes. An ancient pilgrim’s route brings us back on a fun descent back into Ortisei.
Day 2: Ortisei to Plattkofelhutte (24km +1500m / -1200m)
Our first day on the tour starts with a cable car up over 800m. Our destination is a mountain refuge, but this is more like a mountain hotel than a refuge with great menu options. From Mont Seuc marvel at the view over Alpe di Siusi before setting out for 8km of runnable trails across open alpine pastures. After coffee and strudel at Salter Hutte, a steep rocky climb brings us to Altipiano Sciliar. Stupendous views unfold as the trail snakes through improbable mountain terrain to arrive for more refreshments at Tierser Alp Hutte. The surroundings become more verdant for the final rolling ridgeline into Plattkofelhutte.Â
Day 3: Plattkofelhutte to Selva (18km +850m / -1600m)
The rockier trails of today come with the benefits of some very impressive up-close mountain scenery. We head out before sunrise (weather permitting) to scale the rocky flank of Plattkofel for views as far as the Austrian Alps. Back down to the hut for coffee and breakfast before hitting the trail. Circumnavigate the Plattkofel/Langkofel massif, clockwise, before cutting up through the rugged heart of the mountains to the narrow Langkofel scharte (col). They’ve somehow managed to squeeze a mountain hut onto this col. Good for us, more coffee and cakes before a steep zig zag descent to the Sella joch (pass). Run beneath the massif cliffs of Langkofel’s east face to arrive at Ciampinoi (optional cable car down to trim off around 4km and 700m descent). A final steep descent through forest brings us to our overnight stop in the hotel in Selva.
Day 4: Selva to Corvara (19km +1200m / -2000m)
This is a day with scenes very much like of a mini Yosemite. Following a cable car uplift we run above the steep valley side on a trail that sneaks through the ramparts of cliffs. At the top, skirt the upper rim of this massif, trough-like, U-shaped valley on beautiful trails. We stop for the night in a hotel in Corvara.
Day 5: Corvara to Ortisei (25km +1600m / -2000m)
Our final day on the tour but one of the most impressive. We make our way back up into the mountains with dramatic views down onto the valleys below before finishing the day running back over alpine meadows above Ortisei. The final evening is spent celebrating the adventure and all that you have achieved!
Departure Day
We leave Ortisei in the morning via private minibus for Bolzano and onward connections.
MAP
GETTING THERE
We will be meeting in Bolzano, the regional capital, Italy on the arrival day. The nearest airports are Verona, Innsbruck, Bergamo, Milan, Venice, Bologna, Treviso, Salzburg and Munich. The connection from the airports to the railway stations is provided by several shuttles. Verona and Innsbruck provide the easiest and cheapest connections via rail to Bolzano. To/From Bolzano the group will be taking a private transfer to Ortisei.
ACCOMMODATION
We will be staying in hotels in the valleys where breakfast is included, and accommodation is based on sharing a twin room. There will be one night in a mountain refuge where rooms are small dormitories and the accommodation will be half board. The evening meals in Ortisei are included in your booking.
ABILITY
We average around 13 miles / 20km, plus 1,500m height change for each of the 5 days we are running. You’ll need to be prepared to be out on the trails for most of the day. We walk the uphills so there is time to soak up the scenery and pace ourselves for the duration of the trip. If it’s your first time to the Dolomites, you might be surprised by how much hiking can be involved, almost 40% of the route, but it is inevitable in such steep environments. It’s important to train before you arrive, particularly with multi-day hikes and runs. We recommend you have run a marathon distance in 4.5 hours or less and have some experience on alpine trails. Runners are grouped by ability to maximise your enjoyment. A free training plan is provided for you to follow in the lead up to the trip.
This adventure can also be easily booked for a private group, see our bespoke options.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
Overnight accommodation in Ortisei for 3 nights, including breakfast (based on sharing a twin room)
Evening meals in Ortisei
Half board accommodation during the tour (based on sharing a twin room or dormitory in the mountain refuge)
Bag transport to each day’s destination (except for the night in the hut)
Private return group transfer from Bolzano to Ortisei
Qualified trail running guide, with you every step of the way
Technical instruction
Pre-trip training plan
Trees not Tees Certificate
Medal
70 miles / 110km of some of the best scenery in the Dolomites

“Professional and well organised with friendly and knowledgeable guides. The trip balanced adventure and exploration with seamless accommodation and logistics. Simon and Bruno were a combination of mountain goat, sheepdog and local guide who provided us the freedom to run at our own pace while ensuring the group was safe and on track. This was a brilliant trip and I highly recommend Run the Wild.”
“The mountains and route are just amazing and this is definitely an experience not to be missed! The RTW team really are great and I look forward to booking more of their trips in the future. Thanks for an epic week!”
“Incredibly gifted guides who are able to put on a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all abilities. Simon and the team were phenomenal guides, ensured all logistics went smoothly, and most importantly, allowed us to enjoy an incredibly week running the Tour du Mont Blanc! They made our honeymoon an experience we will never forget!”
“Amazing AMAZING week with run the wild, running the tour du Mont Blanc. The organization of the whole trip was so well done, everything was thought out from breakfasts, to lunch, hotels, bag transport, etc. Our guides were so passionate and accessible. A week I will never forget! I can only recommend.”
“I’ve just had the most amazing time in the Alps on the Full Tour du Mont Blanc trip.
Like the other 6 events I’ve done with them, it was brilliantly organised & fun. But this really surpassed all expectations for what a week’s running experience could be like. Each day was challenging and hugely satisfying because of it, with wonderful views, breathtaking trails and informative chats about running in the mountains or the history and geography of the landscape etc…
I heartily recommend! I still haven’t come down from it! *mountain pun intended*”
“Just completed Run the Wild’s Tour of Mont Blanc 6 day running adventure. It was an utterly amazing experience. The program ran seamlessly from start to finish, extremely well organized, challenging, and fun. Very highly recommend. Thank you to Simon, Karin and Bruno for the experience of a lifetime!!”
“It was a fantastic trip and Alister was absolutely great!”
RACHEL – SEPTEMBER 2020
“Thank you to you, Al and Karin for an outstanding trip. The route was unforgettable, the group was great and I learned a lot about my own running ability. I would definitely take a RtW trip again and have lasting memories from this one.”
