TANZANIA: FOOTSTEPS OF MANKIND

This trip has been almost 10 years in the making and we are so excited that we can offer this unique experience. No one has ever run this entire trail before! We will be following the footsteps of where humans are first thought to have walked on Earth. And with that the first trail runners, originating in Tanzania, Africa. On this 10 day once in a lifetime adventure you will be running through rain forests, visiting the Ngorongoro Crater where rhino, lions and hyenas run wild. Then dropping down to Lake Natron with its 300,000 lesser flamingos , just below the world’s only active alkaline volcano. Making our way up onto the Serengeti plains via the Rift Valley wall. From there we will be running to where some of the oldest hominoid remains have been found at 2 million years old in the ‘cradle of mankind’.

Along the way you will be staying in 5* lodge camps as well as wild camps, visiting a waterfall that flows from the Rift Valley, going on safari, seeing breathtaking sunsets, running with the Maasai, putting your feet in 20,000 year old footprints of trail runners that once ran across the plains below East Africa’s only active volcano Oldai Lengai (Mountain of God), waking up to stunning sunsets, running next to zebras and seeing some of the most incredible vistas Africa has to offer.

You will be doing this with support of a logistics crew following in a land cruiser, setting up camp and providing you with delicious food and some cold sundowners at the end of the day.

Join us for this once in a lifetime trail running experience and reconnect with the very first trail runners. Are you ready?

ARRIVAL

Start: Arusha, Tanzania

TRAVEL ACCESS

Via Kilimanjaro Airport

ACCOMMODATION

Safari Lodges & Camps

ITINERARY

The trip is broken down into 10 days including arrive and departure days (days 1 and 10), we will meet you at the airport on arrival.

MAP

GETTING THERE

There are lots of flight connections into Kilimanjaro Airport. There are a few trusted routes serviced by KLM and Qatar Airways.

ACCOMMODATION

We will be staying in safari lodges as well as camps during the run. These are detailed in the itinerary. Full board is included except for the first and last night, which is bed and breakfast.

ABILITY

We average around 25km a day but the days vary in distance due to terrain. During the days we will be running we get up early to avoid the heat of the day and we also have a vehicle on hand. You’ll need to be prepared to be out on the trails for a few hours and at longest 5 hours. The terrain varies from rainforest to desert conditions. We walk the uphills so there is time to soak up the scenery and pace ourselves for the duration of the trip. It’s important to train before you arrive, particularly with multi-day hikes and runs. We recommend you have run a marathon distance in 4.5 hours or less. A free training plan is provided for you to follow in the lead up to the trip.

This adventure can also be easily booked for a private group, see our bespoke options.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • Overnight accommodation (based on sharing a twin room)
  • Full board accommodation during the tour (half board in Arusha)

“Professional and well organised with friendly and knowledgeable guides. The trip balanced adventure and exploration with seamless accommodation and logistics. Simon and Bruno were a combination of mountain goat, sheepdog and local guide who provided us the freedom to run at our own pace while ensuring the group was safe and on track. “I’ve just had the most amazing time in the Alps on the Full Tour du Mont Blanc trip.

Like the other 6 events I’ve done with them, it was brilliantly organised & fun. But this really surpassed all expectations for what a week’s running experience could be like. Each day was challenging and hugely satisfying because of it, with wonderful views, breathtaking trails and informative chats about running in the mountains or the history and geography of the landscape etc…

I heartily recommend! I still haven’t come down from it! *mountain pun intended*”
